Determinism, freedom of choice, and free will are central concepts which permeate life itself. The fields of philosophy, literature, social science, religion, and artificial intelligence, among others, have grappled with these concepts and their complex relationships. In face value, it appears that determinism and freedom of choice are contradictory concepts.
Many canonical performance texts, such as the Oedipus trilogy, deal with these notions. These texts beg natural questions such as ``does Oedipus think he possesses free will?'' or ``does Antigone believe she is acting on her own accord?'' Looking at the texts themselves, we are, in fact, able to answer these questions. It is clear that Oedipus thinks he has free will, since he tries to escape his prophesied fate. He does not succeed, but, he obviously tried, and thus believed he could.
